A winking frog figurine praying for us with one eye closed

I would like to Introduce numerous small green frog figurines piled up around the Great Buddha bronze statue located in the famous temple of Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Winking frog figurines praying for us with one eye closed. They pray the Budda the protection of our eyes acting as a substitute.

In Kinomoto Jizō-in temple, there is a 6-meter-tall bronze statue of the Great Buddha, surrounded by countless small green ceramic frog figurines, each with one eye closed.

This originates from an ancient tale that the frogs dwelling here, offering themselves as substitutes, pray: ‘May all people's precious eyes receive the protection of the Great Buddha,’ and ‘May all people lead healthy lives.’ It is said they live with one eye closed.

Countless green frog figurines are piled upon the pedestal of the Great Buddha.

Visitors write their name and age onto the belly of a frog figurine and dedicate it. Donation: one thousand yen.

They are placed everywhere around the Great Buddha

This is the frog figurine I dedicated with my thousand yen. At first, I thought writing my name on it and placing it in front of the Great Buddha, but I brought back home as a memento instead.
